Her paintings are quite impressive when seeing by a naked eye, but you are also given “ChromaDepth 3D” glasses, and step into 3D world... At the end of the exhibition, you were asked to "recycle" used glasses, but instead I took them home.

After exhibition, I've got interested in that technology, and ChromaDepth Technologies site contained quite a bit of explanations and examples. The biggest revelation was this: "all you need is any color picture and a pair of glasses". And since I had glasses, I started to look at my own photos, trying to find those , where 3D effect is really prominent and clear.

So here's a collection of my photos, which I recommend to check out while wearing ChromaDepth 3D glasses.

Evans Court & The Horse, Montreal

Tulips: red

Candle and Champaign

A fragment of ROM wall

Honest Ed's on snowy evening

Canada Day Fireworks (Downsview) - 2010 - III

Christmas Tree

Glass

K. They were taken with 35mm film point and shoot Olympus mju-II camera, someone digitalized them for me during the same year, using some cheap old film scanner - quite primitive, and very small in size. However I really like the colours and the soft focus of those pictures. With their digital date preserved, in the film strip frame, I think they've made into a nice miniature "roof top" series.

Staroměstské náměstí (Old Town Square) from Oriel Chapel and from the street level

Towards Hradčany and Petřín from Oriel Chapel

Týn Cathedral from Oriel Chapel

Karlov Bridge and Klementinum from Karlov Bridge Tower on east side

Malá Strana and St. Nicholas church from Hradčany

2003, Olympus mju-II, unidentified film scanner

K. This is a pure Photoshop exercise, and also the subject of the picture was not that original. I'm sure in some time from now (and with few more photoshop "sepia" sessions) I will think this was not worth posting... But right now I reached the effect I wanted to some degree. So here it is:

Old house near cemetery, Rehovot, Israel

Steps:

Duplicate background layer (Ctrl+J). Go to Image -> Adjustments -> Channel Mixer, check "Monochrome" option and play with channels to get the right mixture of black/grey/white, click OK when ready. Sometimes Image -> Adjustments -> Brightness/Contrast would need to be applied on top of that.

Duplicate monochrome layer (Ctrl+J), so now there's a background (colour), and 2 identical monochrome layers

Choose the upper layer, Image -> Adjustments -> Photo Filter, select Color radio button and specify a desired sepia tone (something along #504030 line in hexa-representation), set Density to 100%, leave Preserve Luminosity checked, click OK. This is the main 'sepia' layer.

Now choose the background layer, and go to Select -> Color Range. Choose some white or very light spot on the picture. Set fuzziness so, that few whitish spots would highlight (not too much white, but also not too little, thus more bright pictures would need fuzziness around 20-40, and the darker ones would need 80-120). Click OK when ready

Now with selection shown, choose black and white layer and click Ctrl+J to select a new layer from selection. Move this new layer to be on top of 'sepia' layer. Looks l=ugly at this point, but we are not done yet.

Make sure that this new image is bright enough, or brighten it if needed. For example with Image -> Adjustments -> Selective Color, choose Neutrals and move Black slider to the negative part (to the left) until it whitens. This is your 'white' layer.

Now with 'white' layer selected, go to Image -> Adjustments -> Photo Filter, choose Color radio button and specify the same sepia tone as for 'Sepia' layer, but this time leave Density at 25%.

Clean up the details, e.g. sharpen, resize, crop, etc... Done.

2005, Fuji Finepix S5000
this place on the map

K. I hope Kleinburg does not loose its charm. I hope it's not a fall for true village. But talking about places that are gone: I want to remember two of them.

Mr. McGregor’s House. It was a unique cafe inside the old farmhouse, where you could drink a very good tea from a very elegant china, and a desert table was full of tempting home-made pies and tarts. Their garden was a little bit overloaded with garden furniture and all kinds of old objects, which nevertheless fitted well into the style of this place. ...And I never bothered to take picture anywhere in or around McGregor’s House, of which I now regret. I guess I was too busy eating the tarts.

It's even more sad to say good-bye to another unique place - the Kleinburg Book Company, an independent bookstore inside the wooden house (previously it was a timber barn), with the fireplace, and squeaking stairs, and a great choice of books. One could dive into its relaxing atmosphere and forget to leave for hours, to which the owners didn't object. I'd like to mention them here too: Zena and Paul Reinhardt, their passion for books created and was driving the place. Unfortunately Zena have passed away on July 2nd this year.

The Kleinburg Book Company

Islington street, Kleinburg

Park around the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and Tom Thomson Shack on the back. It was moved here from its original site in Rosedale Ravine (according to McMichael site).

And a few shots of Humber River trails:

2008, Nikon D40 + DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 GII ED
this place on the map

K. It was in the middle of the summer - long hot days, which didn't want to give up even after the sunset.

Place Jacques-Cartier (full size)

Bonsecours Market and Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel behind it (full size)

Montreal City Hall (full size)

Place Vauquelin (full size)

Champ-de-Mars (full size)

2007, Nikon D40 + DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 GII ED
this place on the map (and here is even a better map)

K. To compare, I used this simple scenery photo, which was taken on a cloudy day, so in general it is suitable for such sort of transformation (I mean: it could rain on that day):

First of all this picture is too dry. Ground and the trees should be darker, and the grass - greener:

I used two separate Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layers with masks (as described in for the ground and the tree at the front):

Create a new Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation)

Set Saturation to a positive number (10 to 30) and the lightness to a negative number (-10 to -30)

Edit layer mask so, that all parts of the image that do not fit this hue/saturation scheme are outside of the mask (To edit the mask: select the mask and paint with black to edit things out, or with white to include the things into it).

The only other small edit I am missing in here (and don't know how to do for now) are reflections on the surfaces, like stones and the tree. Maybe even little pools along the trails. But I will skip those for now.

Now the rain itself. I found 2 methods of doing it.

Option 1: Add Noise + Motion Blur

There are many variations of this tutorial, giving different results. In general the steps are:

Create the new layer (Shift+Ctrl+N) with white, black or mixed, Filter > Render > Clouds background

Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise, set Distribution to Gaussian and check Monochromatic option. Play with Amount to add the desired amount of raining and the size of the raindrops.

Go to Filter > Blur > Motion blur and set desired Angle (between -45 and 45 degrees) and the desired "speed" of raindrops by setting the Distance (somewhere between 10 and 40)

Optionally the following effects can be used:

Filter > Distort > Twirl to give it a feeling of the wind

Double application of Motion Blur with different Angle/Distance.

Decreasing the Brightness of this layer helps to make the rain less severe, and increasing Contrast might help to highlight the drops

While the layer with the "rain" is selected, right-click on it, select Blending options and choose Screen in the Layer Style dialog.

The final optional adjustments can include:

Play with Opacity on Layer Style dialog if the rain is too heavy.

Create 2 layers, with different Noise/Blur options, to make the rain less "uniform".

I used 2 layers, one with "bigger", almost vertical drops, and the other with smaller, "angled" drops. For both layers, I played with the brightness and contrast of the rain until it looked right.

Option 2: Using the brush

I found this tutorial and I think it gives better results, though involves a little bit more work. I followed the steps of Creating Rain Drops and Making It Rain. In addition to 2 layers described in the tutorial, I added one more, with even smaller drops and Gaussian Blur.

2005, Fuji Finepix S5000

K.
